KANSAS CITY, Missouri – On July 25th, City Union Mission started giving away outfits to children who come from struggling families as part of the mission’s “back to school outreach” program.

In order for students to receive these free outfits they must be income-qualified, between the grade levels of kindergarten and sixth grade, and the parents must carry the correct documentation for each student who qualifies. Vouchers were sent out to parents who qualify in advance.

In a press release issued on July 25th, Executive Director Dan Doty expressed the importance of the “back to school outreach.”

“We believe that having clothes that fit properly, that are comfortable and promote a child’s self-confidence is important to their success in the classroom,” Doty said. “When a student succeeds in school, there’s a much greater chance for success in life.”

City Union Mission started out with 400 outfits up for grabs. As of July 26, there are 200 uniforms left for students to claim. The documentation needed in order to sign up is the parent’s ID, proof of income, proof of address, their student’s social security card and the student’s birth certificate. The offices are open for families to redeem their vouchers Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, after August 1st the office hours will be changed to Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

No appointment is needed to redeem the vouchers, but outfits will only be available during school hours. Each uniform includes the following: two polos, two pairs pants, two pairs of underwear, and two pairs of socks. The money for the uniforms will be provided by donations from corporations, churches and any individuals who wishes to donate.

August 18th is the last day to qualify for the uniforms. You can redeem your vouchers at 1700 E. 8th Street. For any questions about the program, go to www.cityunionmission.org.
