Kansas City’s Chihuahua Parade didn’t break the Guinness Book world record. But, organizers have still deemed the parade a success.
From tacos to tutus to ponchos, dogs of all kinds came dressed in a variety of costumes May 5.
Nearly 500 dogs registered for the parade in The Crossroads Art District, but it wasn’t enough to break the world record of 700 dogs in costume.
“I thought the turnout was great,” said Melody Kelso, director of The Pet Connection Inc., a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter in the Kansas City metro area. “We had some speaker problems; we know there were a lot of people who didn’t register. I’m afraid we might have been closer than we can imagine. We might have even done it.”
Unfortunately for parade organizers, Guinness Book officials only count the number of dogs registered.
United Entertainment hosted the parade to kick off Cinco de Mayo and to benefit the animal shelter.
Through entry fees, the event raised nearly $3,000 for the animal shelter, Kelso said.
“That’s really going to help us get caught up and take good care of our animals,” she said.
United Entertainment and Pet Connection are already planning another Chihuahua Parade for next year and they’re keeping their paws crossed for a world record.
