A Northeast man has been charged with murder for the June 21 shooting of Donald Maxey at the intersection of St. John and Topping.

According to court records, Dustin Jones, 23, will face counts of second degree murder and armed criminal action.

Jones was seen riding in a black pick-up truck the night of the shooting. Surveillance cameras for a nearby business show the victim walking westbound on St. John Avenue at approximately 10:25 p.m. The cameras also show the truck eastbound on St. John, then shortly after, westbound on St. John toward the crime scene.

Witnesses noted that Jones got out of the truck at St. John and Topping and confronted Maxey. Court documents note that Maxey at one point dared Jones to shoot him. Witnesses report hearing a single gunshot and seeing Maxey fall to the ground holding his side.

Jones then got in the truck and fled northbound on Topping.

Maxey called his brother who picked him up to take him to the hospital. Police stopped them near Independence Avenue & Benton Boulevard. Maxey was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later died of his injury.

Jones is currently held in the Jackson County jail on $200,000 bond.
