Sugar Creek residents are continuing to pay tribute to their Slavic heritage and they’re inviting everyone to join in on the festivities.

For 30 years, Sugar Creek has hosted the Sugar Creek Slavic Festival and what began as a simple, one-day event has turned into a two-day celebration that attracts thousands of visitors annually.

This year’s festival will be held this weekend, from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, and from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Mike Onka Memorial Building grounds, 11520 E. Putnam, Sugar Creek, Mo.

Slavic Festival attendees will be able to partake in some of the Slavic traditions – from sampling dishes like sarma (cabbage rolls) and kielbasa (polish sausage) to participating in the Kolo dance lessons.

One of the staples of the festival is the annual sausage eating contest where contestants scarf down an 18-inch link of sausage as fast as they can.

In addition to the ethnic cuisine, there will also be children’s and adult dance troupe performances, a children’s costume parade, family-friendly games, live music, a cabbage roll dance-off and more.

Headlining this year’s festival is Alex Meixner, a Grammy-nominated accordion master. Meixner and his band will offer a high energy polka experience mixed with unique takes on modern classics.
