Librarians from the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (KCPL) share weekly book and digital resource recommendations on a variety of topics. They can all be found through KCPL.

This week’s recommendation is from Diana Ash, Senior Library Technical Assistant.

She chose Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden for our Banned Book Series.

“One of the ALA’s most challenged books of the 1990s, it was burned on the steps of the courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas, leading to a Supreme Court Case,” Ash said. “Groundbreaking for its time, Annie on My Mind is a story of two teenage girls falling in love. The 2000 School Librarian Journal voted it one of the most influential books of the 21st century. I initially chose this book because I was curious about the book burning, but I loved the book for the positive message it sends to young adults in the LGBTQ+ community.”
