This feisty news-pooch learned last week that the Missouri House of Representatives debated and passed a ban on bans. You heard right, news denizens. Our elected representatives at the state level passed House Bill 722, which bans any ban a municipality or taxing governmental entity would place on so called single use plastic grocery bags.
Sponsored by Representative Dan Shaul of Arnold, Mo., the bill comes in response to the city of Columbia’s consideration of a ban on the single use plastic grocery bag. Shaul, it should be noted, is the state Director of the Missouri Grocers Association, so the bill would be self serving to say the least. This news-dog is curious as to how much time the legislature actually spent discussing plastic grocery sacks and why they’re the bane of the existence of the environmentalist whacko set. For the record, plastic grocery bags were introduced in order to save the rain forests. Paper bags were evil, apparently, and needed to be replaced.
While the bill, in and of itself, may seem like silliness, the level to which the whole thing has sunk is ludicrous, to say the least. Seriously, legislation that actually bans bans. This pooch thinks that common sense has left the building for good and by the looks of things, won’t be coming back any time soon. This doggie wonders about the possibility of legislation introduced by the Ministry of Silly Walks that would ban silly bans.
