Thursday, October 27 
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Knights of Columbus to host free movie night
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host a free movie night on Thursday, October 27 at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). The night will feature a screening of Becket, featuring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole. Concessions will be available, including popcorn, snacks, hot dogs, nachos and cheese, and drinks. Please do not bring outside food or drinks. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., and the movie begins at 7:00 p.m.

American Daughters of Columbus Halloween Luncheon
The American Daughters of Columbus will host their Annual Halloween Luncheon on Thursday, October 27, beginning at noon at the Sons of Columbus Hall (2415 Independence Ave.). The luncheon will be followed by Bingo. The cost to attend is $5; a raffle and many door prizes will be included.

 

Friday, October 28
Chair fitness
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, October 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a chair fitness class. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

United Inner City Services Annual Fall Festival – October 28
Join United Inner City Services (2008 E. 12th Street, Kansas City, MO 64127) on Friday, October 28 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for their Annual Fall Festival. This year’s theme is “Harvest a Healthy Lifestyle.” Entertainment for the evening includes a Family Puppet Workshop courtesy of the Mesner Puppet Theatre. The workshop will include an opportunity to interact directly with the puppets. There will also be games, food, prizes, free pumpkins, and the opportunity to meet with community sponsors. In addition, a Walgreens Flu Shot Clinic will be hosted on site from 3:00 p.m. until the event ends at 7:00 p.m.

 

Saturday, October 29
KC Museum’s KCFD history exhibit now open
The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) is now presenting In the Line of Duty: A History of the Kansas City, MO Fire Department from 1868-1968, an exhibition that explores stories of courage and dedication that comprise the heritage and development of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department (KCFD). From its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to international fame, and from technological triumphs to tragic losses, the KCFD has over 100 years of proud service to its community.

Northeast Community Clean-up event
The Historic Northeast will have another community clean-up opportunity on Saturday, October 29, when the city will provide a tire trailer for the Northeast area at The Concourse from 8:00 a.m. until noon. There will also be two trash trucks and truck for brush at The Concourse, as well as two trash trucks and a truck for brush at Budd Park.

 

Sunday, October 30
Chess club
Join the Kings Club Youth Chess Team at 10 a.m. every Sunday at New Beginning Apostolic Church, 200 N. Bales Ave. All kids 3rd-12th grades are welcome. Contact Gaston Woodland (816- 977-0470) for more information.

Halloween at the North-East Public Library
Come out to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Road) for a Halloween party on Sunday, October 30, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. At this event designed for families with young children, dress up in your Halloween costumes and stop by the library for Halloween crafts, games, and more!

 

Monday, October 31
Scare-it Halloween
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association is once again partnering with the Kansas City Museum, the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund, KC Parks, and more for the 23rd Annual Scare-it Halloween Event on Monday, October 31, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on the 3600 block of Gladstone. The neighborhood association will close off five blocks, for car-free trick-or-treating; a pop-up haunted house, off track toddler train, KC Ghostbusters with their Superhero friends, the Kansas City Museum Fairy Princess costume contest, and much more entertainment – all for free.

English for Citizenship
Join the North-East Public Library at 10:00 a.m. for a free course designed to improve your English speaking, reading, listening, and pronunciation skills. Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, November 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, November 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

BikeWalk KC – Kansas City Tweed Ride
BikeWalk KC’s 7th annual Kansas City Tweed Ride will take place on Saturday, November 5, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Cliff Drive in Kessler Park. Riders will congregate at the intersection of St. John Avenue and Gladstone Blvd at 10:00 a.m., with the ride scheduled to commence at roughly 11:00 a.m. Riders are encouraged to dress in turn of the century clothing, including wools, tweeds, silks, and argyles. Riders and their machines will be judged and awarded prizes based on appearance, authenticity, originality, and creativity. Riders will stop at the Kansas City Museum for live music and prizes, so don’t forget to pack a lunch. The cost to attend is a suggested donation of $15 for an individual, $25 for couples, or $35 for families.

Special collection clean-up set for November 5
The City of Kansas City, Missouri has orchestrated a special collection event on Saturday, November 5 at Manual Career Tech Center (1320 Truman Road), from 8:00 a.m. until noon. During that event, area residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of tires, paint, brush, small appliances, electronics, building materials, glass and clothing. Proof of residency will be required.
Blue Valley Kiwanis Club Chili Day dinner
Everyone is invited participate in my Blue Valley Kiwanis Club’s 2016 Chili Day fundraiser on Thursday, November 17 at the Salvation Army building at 6618 Truman Road. Members of the Kiwanis Club will serve chili from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Tickets cost $7, and include all you can eat chili, dessert & beverages! Carry-out is also available.
