City Offices Closed & Trash Pick-up Delayed

Due to the holiday, the City of Kansas City, Mo., offices will be closed Christmas Day. The 311 Call Center will also be closed. Curbside trash and recycling will be delayed one day for residents who usually receive trash service on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. There will be a “no tag” period for trash collection from Dec. 26 through Dec. 31. During this time, residents may set out up to 15 bags (or up to 500 pounds) on the curb without tags. This is done to accommodate the extra trash that is usually accumulated at this time of year. Using the city’s unlimited curbside recycling program by recycling plastics #1-7, cardboard and seasonal gift boxes can reduce the amount of trash bags being placed on the curb as well. Christmas trees may be disposed of at the city’s Leaf and Brush Drop-off Centers: 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway and 11600 N. Main Street, both open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at 10301 Raytown Rd., open on Saturdays only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The North-East Public Library will host a computer class at the library at 10 a.m. and will talk about the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, with an emphasis on templates and various menu options.

Free Day at the Zoo

Jackson and Clay County residents will receive free admission into the Kansas City Zoo from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Zoological District complimentary admission day. Please bring a phot ID with your Jackson or Clay County address to receive free admission.

Scarritt Renaissance Monthly Meeting

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting on Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum. During the meeting, an election of officers will be held. If you have paid your 2013 dues, you are eligible to vote.

Intercept Human Trafficking Event

The public is invited to join United Methodist Women from the Kansas City Metro Area on Jan. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to noon to learn more about human trafficking on both a local and global scale. The Intercept Human Trafficking event will be held at the downtown campus of The Church of the Resurrection, 1522 McGee Street, Kansas City, Mo. United Methodist Women from St. James United Methodist Church and The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection are hosting this event for persons of all faiths. The event will include a coffee and gathering time, an informal panel discussion and dialogue, and action steps. Learn how to identify victims in your own community and what to do when you spot signs of human trafficking. Registration is not necessary but preferred. To register, visit www.cor.org/women. KCPS Facilities Master Plan Meeting

Kansas City Public Schools will host two public meetings in January regarding the Facilities Master Plan. The first meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Paseo Academy, 4747 Flora, Kansas City, Mo. The next meeting will be held on Jan. 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Manual Career and Technical Center, 1215 E. Truman Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Both meetings will include draft school boundary options and allow for community feedback.  The sessions will also feature an outline of the Capital Improvement Plan and options for financing facility improvements in the future. All are invited to attend.
