Three Kansas City Firefighters were transported to local hospitals for injuries sustained while responding to a reported house fire in the 5200 block of Independence Ave. at 6:52 pm on Saturday, May 30. Two of the firefighters have minor injuries, and a third has significant injuries. According to the KCFD Media Unit, all injuries are non-life threatening and all three responders are in stable condition. On arrival, crews reported heavy fire from a vacant three-story multi-family structure (apartment). Interior operations were initiated using multiple handlines. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions on multiple floors, including the basement. At 7:32 pm a mayday was called for a firefighter in distress. This firefighter was quickly removed by crews operating nearby. The Incident Commander made the decision to evacuate the structure and go defensive. The fire was brought under control at 8:00 pm. Searches of the structure came back all clear for civilians. Dangerous Buildings and City Planning have been requested. The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.
