Ted’s Barber Shop, located at 2631 Independence Blvd is a neighborhood institution run by Ted Davis, who has been cutting hair for over 4 decades — 20 of those years right on Independence Avenue — after previously working at Oney’s Barber Shop near 55th and The Paseo. Davis made history as the first Black-owned barbershop on Independence Ave, a distinction recognized by Mayor Mark Funkhouser. In 2005, despite suffering a major stroke while cutting hair, he was told he might never walk or work again — yet 20 years later, he’s still behind the chair. His favorite part of being in Northeast KC? The people: “Anywhere I go people greet me and say hi.”

VP Barber & Braiding, located at 2532 Independence Blvd, opened in December 2023 under the ownership of husband-and-wife team Victor and Patience Gaye, who both hail from Liberia. Building on a family legacy of African hair braiding, the couple expanded the services their parents once offered next door by growing the business into a full-service barbershop and braiding studio. Today, VP Barber & Braiding is known for its clean, safe, and family-friendly environment, its strong community focus, and its flexibility in serving customers, offering walk-ins as well as home or hospital visits when needed.

Eleganté, a full-service barbershop and salon located at 2600 Independence Blvd, STE 103 has been serving the community for three years under the ownership of Araceli Borja. With seven chairs and a diverse team of hair-care specialists who speak English, Spanish, and Arabic, the shop welcomes men, women, and children for a wide range of services, including fades, flat tops, beard trims, facial shaves, and color treatments. Open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eleganté offers convenience, quality, and accessibility, with a standard haircut priced at $30 and dedicated parking available in the lot behind the building.
