Inside a mesh tent at the corner of the Pendleton Heights Community Orchard (2617 Lexington Ave.), neighborhood residents gathered to assist and learn with an up-close look at the Honey Harvesting process on Sunday, Aug. 3.
David Friesen, founder of Bee KC, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit that maintains beehives across Kansas City, collected 29 frames from the orchard’s hives that would provide honey for this event’s harvest.
From cutting excess wax from the hive frames to access the honey to spinning the centrifugal extractor, a variety of tasks gave volunteers a chance to assist — and sample a taste of honey straight from the hive. Fresh honey was also for sale to take home and enjoy.

Sunday’s event was a “part two” to an event held earlier this year at the orchard when additional bees were installed by Bee KC to maintain these hives’ bee population. In addition to producing honey, these bees also pollinate the 30 fruit trees within the orchard as well as neighboring plants throughout the Pendleton Heights neighborhood.
