KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City Police have a suspect in custody after a cutting incident and stand-off Tuesday night.
According to Captain Tye Grant of the KCPD Media Unit, shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex along the 1300 block of Woodland Avenue for a reported cutting. Upon arrival, they located the victim, Fredrick Burtin, 49, of Kansas City, Mo., outside the address and immediately began CPR before the victim was transported to an area hospital, where he was declared dead.
An operation 100 was called and negotiators attempted to contact the suspect. Officers believed the suspect, a close relative of the victim, was still inside the apartment when they arrived on scene.
The suspect refused to answer to the negotiators, even after several hours of attempts. Tactical officers then made contact with the suspect after they were able to open the door to the apartment, but the suspect became combative and we backed away. Shortly before midnight the suspect was taken into custody after he came out of the apartment. The suspect was discovered to have a small laceration so he was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Charges are pending. The Northeast News will provide more information once it becomes available.
