Following a building inspection on Sept. 3, an emergency demolition was ordered and work began last week to remove a commercial structure at 4835 Independence Ave.

This structure experienced a partial collapse of its bowstring roof on Aug. 28, causing the west side building wall to bow outward. A section of roadway and sidewalk along Independence Avenue was barricaded to reduce harm to passersby. This cinder block structure was most recently used for storage and was not occupied.

This address has previously housed the Allen’s Bowl and Aaron’s Rental and Sales businesses and was selected as the site for two murals by the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce (NEKCCoC) in 2019.

Due to its location on the building’s west side, “Independence Avenue; Past, Present and Future” by Armando Mesa could not be salvaged. A smaller mural on the building’s east side, “Blue Scroll” by Rachel Cross and Dalton Elliot, was painted on panels attached to the wall and was removed prior to demolition, according to an unofficial statement at press time. These panels will be stored until a new location is selected by NEKCCoC.
