Kansas City Mavericks One Win Away From Championship Glory

The Kansas City Mavericks have put together one of the most impressive seasons in franchise history, and tonight they return home with a chance to keep their Kelly Cup championship hopes alive.

After capturing the ECHL’s Brabham Cup as the league’s regular-season champion, the Mavericks powered through the 2026 Kelly Cup Playoffs with victories over Tahoe, Allen, and Fort Wayne to earn a spot in the Kelly Cup Finals against the Florida Everblades.The championship series has been a battle from start to finish. Kansas City jumped out to an early series lead, but Florida responded with three consecutive wins to take a 3-2 advantage and move within one victory of the Kelly Cup.

Game 5 in Estero, Florida, was filled with momentum swings and playoff intensity. The Everblades earned a 5-2 victory in front of a packed crowd at Hertz Arena, taking control of the series. Florida built an early lead and capitalized on key scoring opportunities throughout the night. Despite the loss, the Mavericks continued to battle and found the back of the net twice to stay within striking distance before the Everblades pulled away late. Kansas City now returns to familiar territory knowing that a win tonight would force a decisive Game 7 and keep its championship dreams alive.

Game 6 of the Kelly Cup Finals is scheduled for tonight, June 15, at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. CDT.

The Mavericks have overcome challenges all season long, and tonight they’ll look to do it once again in front of the home crowd. One win sends the Kelly Cup Finals to a winner-take-all Game 7. The stage is set for another memorable night of hockey in Kansas City.

World Cup Fever Arrives in Kansas City

The world’s biggest sporting event has officially arrived in Kansas City, and soccer fans across the metro are embracing World Cup excitement.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium—known as “Kansas City Stadium” during the tournament—is one of the host venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The first match in Kansas City takes place this week when Argentina faces Algeria on Tuesday, June 16 at 8:00 p.m., kicking off a stretch of six World Cup matches scheduled for the metro throughout June and July.

If you haven’t been able to secure tickets to a World Cup match, there are still plenty of ways to experience the atmosphere.

The official FIFA Fan Festival at the National WWI Museum and Memorial (Liberty Memorial) offers live match broadcasts, entertainment, food vendors, and activities for fans from around the world. It’s expected to be one of the largest public viewing events in the region throughout the tournament.

For those looking for a neighborhood experience, several local businesses have become popular gathering spots for soccer fans. In the Historic Northeast and surrounding areas, supporters can catch matches while enjoying coffee, breakfast, lunch, or a cold drink at places like PH Coffee (2200 Lexington Avenue), Elvira’s (3838 Independence Avenue), and Taqueria Mexico (5920 Independence Avenue). Sports bars, breweries, and restaurants throughout Kansas City are also showing matches, making it easy to find a watch party close to home.

The United States opened its World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay. The Americans’ next group-stage match comes against Australia as they look to continue their strong start and move closer to the knockout rounds.

Mexico began the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the World Cup. El Tri’s next group-stage match is against South Korea on June 18 before concluding group play against Czechia on June 24.

Whether you’re headed to Arrowhead, the Fan Festival, or your favorite neighborhood café, Kansas City is quickly becoming one of the most vibrant World Cup cities in North America.
