BREAKING— Just after 10:04 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, Kansas City Police Department’s (KCPD) Accident Investigation Section (AIS) dispatched to meet East Patrol Division (EPD) officers at the intersection of Independence and Monroe Avenues on a reported hit and run/pedestrian struck with critical injuries.
An initial investigation revealed that a silver Toyota Camry, which was was traveling westbound on Independence Avenue at a high rate of speed, collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with a red traffic control signal, according to a release from KCPD Media Unit, Sunday morning. The Toyota Camry failed to stop at the red traffic signal.
The vehicle ran over the pedestrian following collision and fled the scene immediately.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries where they were pronounced deceased by hospital staff, according to a release from KCPD Media Unit, Sunday morning.
This investigation remains ongoing at this time.
This incident marks traffic fatality 47 compared to 59 at this time in 2024.
