On Saturday, Dec. 20, the 500 block of Prospect Avenue was the scene for holiday cheer. Pendleton Heights neighbor Joe Cedillo, along with friends, family and volunteers from KC Heroes passed out gifts to children up to age 15.

As families lined up waiting for the event to begin, Santa Claus came out, ringing bells to signal the beginning of this annual event. Volunteers stood ready to pass out cookies, hot chocolate and candy as an extra treat once every child had visited Santa. Cookies were provided by neighbors and Elvira’s Panaderia (3838 Independence Ave.) and hot coffee for parents was provided by PH Coffee (2200 Lexington Ave.), making this truly a neighborhood event.

Each year, Cedillo purchases over 1000 gifts to ensure that every Northeast child has a new toy for Christmas. This event continued on Sunday and Monday evening for those not able to attend on Saturday.

At press time, Cedillo said he was thankful for the 35 volunteers, and donated treats from neighbors and businesses that helped him offer over 900 children a Merry Christmas.
