From high-stakes playoff hockey to stellar soccer and the return of summer baseball, our local teams are giving fans plenty of reasons to get out and cheer.
The Kansas City Mavericks clinched the Bruce Taylor Trophy and punched their ticket to the ECHL Kelly Cup Finals with a thrilling, heart-stopping victory in the Western Conference Finals. Facing off against the Fort Wayne Komets in Game 6, the Mavericks jumped to a commanding 3–0 lead, only for the Komets to mount a stunning third-period comeback and net a game-tying goal with just six seconds left on the clock. However, Kansas City refused to break; just 1 minute and 4 seconds into overtime, Jakov Novak fired home the game-winner, locking in a dramatic 4–3 final score and winning the series 4 games to 2.
The Mavericks are heading to the finals for a massive rematch against the Florida Everblades, and Game 1 drops this Friday, June 5, at 7:05 PM right here at Cable Dahmer Arena.

Shifting focus to the pitch, the Kansas City Current continue to build serious momentum in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). In their latest match on Saturday, May 30, the Current secured a gritty 1-0 victory against Boston Legacy FC in front of another packed, energetic home crowd. The match highlight came in the 68th minute when reigning league MVP Temwa Chawinga found herself perfectly positioned on a clinical counterattack, blasting home the lone goal to secure the three points. That win places the Current safely in the upper half of the table, sitting in 6th place with a 7-5-0 record and 21 points, well within striking distance of the top three. Fans will have to wait just a bit to catch them at CPKC Stadium again, as a stretch of away matches and the NWSL Challenge Cup final keeps them on the road until Friday, July 17, 2026, when they return home to host San Diego Wave FC. When match day does arrive, getting to the riverfront is easier than ever before. Thanks to the newly opened KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension, fans can now park anywhere along the free transit spine and ride the streetcar directly to the riverfront stop, which lands just a five-minute walk from the stadium gates.

Beyond our local league clubs, the global spotlight is turning directly toward the metro as the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup tournament prepares to kick off this month. Kansas City is serving as a major hub for the world’s biggest sporting event, hosting four international powerhouse teams for their official tournament base camps. In fact, the excitement is already palpable on the streets as teams have officially begun arriving in town. The defending World Cup champions, Argentina—headlined by superstar Lionel Messi—touched down at Kansas City International Airport this past Sunday to settle into their local headquarters. They are the first to arrive, with national squads from the Netherlands, England, and Algeria all scheduled to land in the metro over the coming days to begin training at top-tier facilities across the region.

Finally, summer baseball is officially back as the Kansas City Monarchs launch their 2026 campaign at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas. Coming off a dominant 2025 season, the Monarchs are navigating an early-season homestand against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the American Association of Professional Baseball. While it is still early in the division standings, the team’s pitching staff is already leading the league with a stellar 3.06 team ERA, keeping them highly competitive after splitting results in their opening series against Kane County and Sioux City. Beyond great baseball, the Monarchs are offering plenty of fan perks this month, making it a highly affordable family outing—especially since parking at Legends Field remains completely free for all attendees. June promotional highlights include Tail Waggin’ Wednesday on June 3, First Responder’s Night on June 5th featuring post-game fireworks, Comic Book Character Night on June 6. Looking ahead, fans may want to plan to attend the game on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, where kids and dads are invited to run the bases together after the final out. Single-game tickets for the Monarchs’ summer run are available now through the team’s official website.
