With a new commander comes a new paradigm. That paradigm was made crystal clear on Sunday afternoon when a flurry of police activity occurred on Windsor Avenue up by the Kansas City Museum. Part of the action was none other than newly appointed East Zone Commander Maj. Ron Fletcher. Fletcher, who was off duty Sunday afternoon, heard the call go out over the radio of an occupied stolen vehicle that Independence PD was trailing with lights and sirens. (They still actually chase bad guys in Independence – much to their credit). Fletcher headed south to “make sure my guys we’re doin’ OK.”

The arrests were made without incident and the bad guys were transported to jail. This newspooch would like to offer some props to Fletcher for his hands-on, can-do attitude despite the fact he was technically off-duty. (You’re never really “off” duty in law enforcement).

It’s been a while since someone with oak leaves on their collar graced any part of East Zone north of Truman Road. If this is the kind of new paradigm we’re going to see from EPD command staff and street officers, then we’re ready to embrace that change in a big way. Been a long time comin’.
