UPDATE: The victim has been identified as: Arelio Antonio-Lazaro WM 11/20/1983
A neighborhood argument took a violent turn Monday evening, leaving one man dead and another fighting for his life.
Just before 6:45 PM on Monday, June 1, KCPD responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting at an apartment complex near the intersection of 12th St. and Askew Ave.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers immediately spotted an adult male standing outside the residence who matched the suspect description provided in the initial dispatch notes. The individual was taken into custody without further incident and is being held for questioning.
Inside the apartment, officers discovered a grim scene. During a sweep of the residence, they located two victims in a bedroom:
An adult male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
An adult male who was unresponsive and suffering from apparent gunshot trauma.
Officers immediately began rendering emergency medical aid to both men until EMS personnel arrived to take over. Tragically, the unresponsive victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Preliminary details from investigators suggest that a verbal dispute between the individuals escalated rapidly, resulting in gunfire. Homicide detectives and crime scene technicians spent the night canvassing the area, gathering witness statements, and collecting physical evidence. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
