Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has announced his resignation, effective June 1.

Greitens made the announcement during an afternoon press conference on May 29, citing the strain on his loved ones as he has grappled with a series of scandals. Even as he announced the decision, Greitens maintained that he has done nothing illegal and referenced the designs of those who have been attacking him legally and politically.

“This ordeal has been designed to cause an incredible strain on my family,” Greitens said.

Greitens choked up during portions of the announcement, especially when discussing those close to him who have been hurt over the past few months.

“This is not the end of our fight. I will always be a fighter for the people of Missouri,” Greitens said. “The time has come to tend to those who have been wounded, and to care for those who need us most.”

Greitens will be replaced by Lt. Governer Mike Parson, who will finish out the remainder of the Governor’s term.

Missouri leaders were quick to put out statements following the announcement, with U.S. Senator Roy Blunt and Attorney General Josh Hawley among those issuing statements within an hour following the resignation.

“Governor Greitens has done the right thing today,” Hawley said. “I wish incoming Governor Mike Parson well, and stand ready to assist him in his transition. This Office’s work for the people of Missouri goes forward.”

“The governor made the best decision for his family and the state,” Blunt added. “I look forward to Gov. Parson’s leadership and will do everything I can to be helpful.”

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, who has been named as the special prosecutor investigating invasion of privacy charges against Greitens, said that her investigation will not be deterred by Greitens’ resignation.

“In short, our investigation continues. In the interest of pursuing justice to its fullest lengths, we will continue until our work on the case is completed,” Baker said. “Specifically regarding any deals we made with Governor Greitens’ attorneys, no deals were made by my office. Our review of this case, as I have stated before, will be pursued without fear or favor.”
