KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Jackson County will soon be searching for a new County Executive.

On Monday, Dec. 21, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, 48, announced he is stepping down from his position, effective Dec. 31, 2015. Earlier this year, Sanders was sworn in for his third term and has been in office since 2006.

In a press release, Sanders said he’d like to spend more time with his family.

“After 13 years in public life, I simply feel the time is right for me to return to the practice of law, and to be able to spend more and better time with my family – my wife, Georgia, and our two young, and very fast-growing sons, John and Patrick,” Sanders said. “And, frankly, we thought, what better time than Christmas to start the new journey.”

Dennis Waits will be appointed as interim County Executive.
