BREAKING — Just after 7 p.m., on Tuesday evening, April 29, Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) responded to the area of Eighth Street and Woodland Avenue within the Independence Plaza neighborhood after crews from KCFD Station 10 (1505 E. Ninth St.) saw smoke coming up from this location.
Once on the scene, crews discovered a two-story, vacant structure, engulfed in flames. Firefighters began a working fire response with interior operations. However, due to heavy smoke and magnitude of the fire, crews were required to evacuate from the building and begin a defensive operation response instead, according to a release from KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, Tuesday evening.
No injuries were reported from this incident and a dangerous buildings request was filed for this structure. The fire’s cause is currently under KCFD investigation. However, KCFD has stated that determining its cause will be challenging because of the damage to the building.
KCFD has announced that the address of the vacant structure is 1716 E. Eighth St.
The Northeast News will provide additional information once it becomes available.
