On June 9, 2026, just after 6 am, Kansas City Police officers were dispatched to Independence Ave. and Monroe on an ambulance call. 

On arrival, officers located an adult male victim unresponsive behind a residence. Officers called for EMS which transported the victim to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening gunshot injuries. 

Assault Unit detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene that day, processed and recovered evidence, canvassed for any witnesses and conducted a limited interview with the victim. 

Assault Unit detectives continued their investigation and worked to develop subject(s) of interest identification. 

Last night, Friday, June 19, detectives were notified that the victim died from his injuries. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation at this time. The victim is identified as Mark Simmons, W/M 08/24/1972. 

Detectives have made headway identifying subject(s) of interest. 

If anyone was in this area (Independence and Monroe avenues) on June 9, and heard or saw anything or has any information, and has not yet talked to police, they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

The Kansas City Police Department stated they are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
