James C. Fortner, 88, formerly of Indian Mound neighborhood, passed away Saturday at his home in Springfield, Missouri. He was a long time Northeast resident, having attended James Elementary and Northeast High School (’46).
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Fortner, and their two children, Mark (Charlotte) and Cheryl (Scott) Warren. James was “Pop” to grandchildren, Shelley (John) Young, Jason Burton, and Stacey Burton, and great-grandchildren Nathan, Kayleigh, and Joel Young; Jayla and Jordan Burton; and Alexandra Henderson. He is also survived by three brothers, Joseph Fortner Jr., Richard Fortner, Robert Fortner and many nieces and nephews.
James was a career truck driver and a member of Teamsters Local 41. A proud moment for him was getting to deliver new turf to the then Royals Stadium, for he was a great fan of all of Kansas City’s sports teams, especially the Royals and Chiefs. He was a proud Navy veteran, having served 1948-1952.
Visitation was held at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, Springfield, MO 11:00 – Noon, Friday Dec. 16, 2016. Committal Service with full military honors will be held promptly at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Missouri Veterans Cemetery on Evans Road, Springfield, MO.
