BREAKING- Just before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers responded to the intersection of 10th Street and Prospect Avenue on a reported “sounds of gunshots” call. However, upon scene arrival, this was updated to a shooting call.

Once on the scene, officers located an unresponsive, adult male gunshot victim on the east side of the intersection. KCPD requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS), who pronounced the victim deceased upon scene arrival, according to a release from KCPD Media Unit, Wednesday evening. KCPD has identified the victim as Ashton Hams (37).

An initial investigation has revealed that the individual was shot by one or more suspects near the dispatch location. Witnesses have shared with KCPD that they heard gunfire near the scene of the incident and did see the victim on the ground.

Officers have discovered that this incident occurred near an apartment complex.

This incident is currently under homicide investigation and remains ongoing at this time.

Homicide detectives and investigators have begun canvassing the area to collect any evidence that may be available and gather witness statements.
