Angie’s International Kitchen — a restaurant located at 3537 Independence Ave., which offers African cuisine — opened nearly a year and a half ago and was a participant in the June 6 Taste & Tour hosted by the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
Angeline Hoff, owner of Angie’s International Kitchen, shared that her favorite aspect of the tour was the people who came to her restaurant.
“I enjoyed the people from different places,” Hoff said in an interview. “We serve in Missouri and the Northeast and can tell about how we started. It’s amazing; other people can see our area and [taste] our food.”
Hoff said this sense of community is also something she enjoys about owning a business within the Historic Northeast.
“Nothing compares to owning your own business,” Hoff said in an interview. “I get to enjoy time for myself and with my family.”

Cortez has gone on to open another Charritos location — Charritos Plaza 2 in Eudora, Kan., which he opened nine years ago, according to Northeast News archives. Cortez opened an additional restaurant, “Lobito’s Steakburger and Mexican Food,” in 2017. However, it is now permanently closed.
Charritos Taqueria serves a variety of traditional Mexican dishes like tacos, however, menu items can include anything from chilaquiles to sincronizada.

Taqueria Mexico #2:
Taqueria Mexico #2 — located at 5920 Independence Ave. — opened in 1997 and has served up a variety of Mexican cuisine to the Historic Northeast community and beyond for the past 28 years.
Manager and Owner Daniel Yuman shared in an interview that this was not Taqueria Mexico #2’s first time participating on the Taste & Tour. He said it is the people, which play a role in the restaurant’s continued participation.
“I really like how they’re doing the Taste & Tour,” Yuman said in an interview. “We always say yes; It’s always a good environment, it’s good for the City. There’s a good amount of people and [we] see new faces.”
However, seeing the community come together is not just specific to the Taste & Tour. And it is this element, which he shared remains one of his favorite aspects of business owning within the Historic Northeast.
“I really enjoy it; It’s nice to talk and be a part of the community,” Yuman said in an interview. “There’s something new every day.”
