This week’s Face of Northeast is Nabil Sharif Abas, a current student at UMKC serving as the UMKC student president for Men of Color.
In his youth, Abas could be found running through the fountains at Concourse or at his local mosque, Masjid Al-Huda Center, located at 141 Van Brunt Blvd.

Now, Abas wants to focus on giving back to the community that raised him by volunteering and helping out with the Al-Huda Youth Group, a group focused on unifying Muslim Youth while combatting common issues they face.

“I enjoy being involved in helping our Muslim youth be their best in whatever way that may be,” Abas said.

Though Abas enjoys and recommends the parks and local restaurants found in the area, his favorite thing in Northeast is the diversity and family atmosphere.

“You meet people from all over, you meet people who are from East Africa, our Latinx community, our Asian community, etcetera,” Abas said. “I enjoy living here because we have a close-knit family atmosphere. You meet good people who genuinely care about you each day. You cannot get that in many neighborhoods these days.”
