Kansas Citians better be buckled up when they drive. Kansas Police Department officers will be working overtime May 21 through June 3 as part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

Officers will target speeding and aggressive driving with an emphasis on seat belt violations. In Missouri vehicle crashes, seven out of 10 people die because of their failure to wear a seat belt. Despite continuing to educate the public on the importance of wearing a seat belt, Missouri’s seat belt use has remained relatively unchanged for the last six years. Missouri’s seat belt use is below the national average of  85 percent.

“We want to send a clear message that we’re serious about this issue,” said Sgt. Grant Ruark of the Traffic Enforcement Unit. “Using a seat belt is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.”
