Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on Monday, June 22, that a Kansas City man has been charged in connection to a shooting that occurred in Northeast Kansas City earlier this month. 

Sergio Isaac Insunza Sanchez faces 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. 

According to court records, Kansas City police responded to a reported shooting near Independence Avenue and Monroe Avenue on June 9 and located a victim in an alleyway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. 

The victim advised he was sitting in a chair inside a homeless camp when an unknown male approached him from the outside of a chain linked fence. The victim directed the man, later identified as the defendant, to leave. The defendant became agitated and shot the victim.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage of the alleyway, which showed a white SUV driving through the alleyway. Audio captured the sound of a single gunshot and then the white SUV is observed exiting the alleyway. Detectives connected Sanchez to the white SUV that night through license plate readers, surveillance video, and social media posts.

On June 18, detectives received information that the victim, Mark Simmons, W/M 08/24/1972, was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries. 

A Jackson County judge set the defendant’s bond at $200,000 cash only. 

According to the Prosecutor’s office, these charges are only accusations, and this defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
