Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on Wednesday, April 15, charges against a Kansas City man in connection with a shooting that occurred outside a funeral earlier this year.

Anthony L. Medley (B/M) faces one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and one count of Armed Criminal Action. Both offenses carry up to 15 years in prison each.

According to Jackson County Circuit Court court records, Kansas City police officers were working security for a funeral in an off-duty capacity, in full uniform on Feb. 27, when they heard multiple gunshots. Bullets struck two people, the front of the church, four vehicles, and one of the off-duty officers was struck by glass shrapnel from a bullet striking a nearby window.

Surveillance footage captured a yellow Dodge Charger circling the area prior to the shooting. Then, multiple gunshots could be heard on camera, followed by a second volley of gunshots. As the second volley of gunshots were heard, the yellow Dodge Charger fled at a high rate of speed.

Multiple witnesses also reported seeing a driver of a yellow Dodge Charger exiting the vehicle and firing shots toward the church, New Beginnings Apostalic Church, 200 N. Bales Ave. An occupant of another vehicle shot back at the suspect in the yellow Dodge Charger.

Detectives used witness descriptions of the shooter, license plate readers, cell phone data, and additional video surveillance to identify the defendant as the suspect.

The defendant is in custody without bond.

According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office, these charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
