Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on Tuesday, April 28, the office charged two people in connection with a shooting that injured one individual at a smoke shop over the weekend.

Ashley Mack (B/F) and Mia Shaw (B/F) each face one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, one count of Armed Criminal Action, and 2nd Degree Burglary. 

Addresses for these defendants listed in the charging documents are located in Northeast.

According to court records, Kansas City police responded to a shooting that occurred on April 25 at a smoke shop at Independence Blvd. and Chestnut Trafficway.. 

Based on surveillance footage from the store, the defendants are captured entering the business and screaming at an employee. As the employee is trying to get the two out of the store, the two attempt to strike the employee, swinging their hands and fists at him. The employee starts pushing the two defendants out of the store. Mack then gestures what appears to be a firearm toward the employee as he backs up toward the store. The employee pulls out a firearm and fires multiple shots, hitting Mack. Shaw then shoots into the store while witnesses are inside. The employee returns fire from inside the store. 

Shaw transported Mack to a local hospital. Mack is now in stable condition.

On Friday, April 24, Mack and Shaw’s brother entered the store, threatening staff. He and the defendants had previously been banned from the store before this shooting took place.

A Jackson County judge set each of the defendants’ bonds at $75,000 / 10%.

Jackson County Prosecutor charges are only accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until the defendants are either found guilty or plead guilty.
