ESL Conversation Group
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an ESL Conversation Group on Wednesday, September 26, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In class you will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Drop in tech coach
The North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, September 27, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

 

History @ Monument
The next Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City, Inc. history presentation at Ilus Davis Park (just north of KCMO City Hall) will be held on Thursday, September 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with complimentary Irish food. The September 27 program will feature the history of the Irish in Kansas City, presented by Pat O’Neil. RSVP is requested through the Kansas City Parks and Recreation community calendar web site.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, September 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, stength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

‘A Quiet Place’ at the library
The Central branch of the Kansas City Public Library continues its Fresh Flicks series on Saturday, September 29, with a screening of A Quiet Place beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Library this month gives the big-screen treatment to five notable films recently released to DVD—from rock ’em sock ’em action to gut-busting comedy to breathless suspense.

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, October 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

 

Tuesday, October 2

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, October 2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

 

Medicare: What you need to know
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, October 2, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. for a free informational program about Medicaid. The program explains Medicare in a way that’s easy to understand. This class will be especially helpful for people turning 65 in the next few months. We will meet in the Chairman’s Office on the first floor.

North-East Branch Improvements
A public meeting discussing the planned improvements to the North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library system will be held on Wednesday, October 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will be encouraged to share their thoughts on 1) what they like about the library; 2) what new programs and services they would like to see; 3) How a refreshed North-East branch should look; 4) Why the library is important to the community; and 5) what technology should be made available at the branch. NEAT Quality Affordable Housing Forum
Northeast Alliance Together (NEAT) will host an affordable housing forum at the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Thursday, October 4, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The panel will be moderated by Jordan Schiele with Jerusalem Farm, and will also include Jennifer Tidwell, KCMO Section Manger (who had a prominent role in the development of its Housing Policy), Mayoral Candidates and City Councilmen Scott Wagner and Quinton Lucas, and affordable housing developers Todd Lieberman and Gloria Ortiz Fisher. Refreshments will be served.

 

Northeast High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony
Northeast High School’s alumni association will host its Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, October 6 at the high school’s Markey-Peters Field House, beginning at 10 a.m. This year’s honorees will be Maryilyn Deister, former synchronized swimming coach and physical education teacher (1950 to 1960); Elise and Suzanne Jones, track and cross country athletes (1979 to 1982); Waunita Small, former boys and girls cross country and track coach, girls basketball and volleyball coach, and athletic director (beginning 1970); and the 1954-55 boys basketball team. In addition, the homecoming parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 5. The parade will start at Northeast High School (415 S. Van Brunt), go north on Van Brunt to St. John, and then head east on St. John to Brighton, south to Thompson and back to the high school.

 

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, October 9, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.
Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association meeting

 

The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 10, from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences,1750 Independence Avenue.
