Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in KC, 1900-2017
The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District Museum (800 Broadway) has opened a new exhibit focusing on historical menswear. The Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in Kansas City, 1900-2017 exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays until February 24. The exhibit explores the history and evolution of tailored menswear in Kansas City from the 20th century to the present, and highlights some of Kansas City’s gentlemen of style throughout the last century. The cost to view the special exhibit is $5.

 

Friday, December 1

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, December 1, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

The EGG pop-up business incubator holiday showcase
Are you interested in selling your art, product or service this holiday season? The Northeast Kansas City Chamber or Commerce will host a pre-holiday showcase this December for new and creative businesses. The Chamber’s EGG pop-up business incubator will open in three-day weekend bursts before Christmas (December 1-3, December 8-10, December 15-17), from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Participants in the Artist Holiday showcase just need to collect Sales Tax and help promote the group showings. Located at 2659 Independence Boulevard, this group POP-UP has a 30 ft. x 30 ft. community gallery space accommodating up to six vendors, with four private lockable Suites of approximately 10 ft. x 10 ft. each. The cost for one of these pre-holiday three-day weekends is $50 during the month of December. Health Insurance Navigator at North-East Library
Stop by the North-East Library branch (6000 Wilson) on Saturday, December 2, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to receive some help navigating the health insurance marketplace. Navigators from the Kansas City CARE clinic will be on hand to help you: understand your coverage available through Medicaid, CHIP, and the Health Insurance Marketplace, understand the health care law (tax credits, penalties, exemptions), set up an account on www.healthcare.gov, and schedule an appointment for free, in-person help for you and your family.

 

Holiday Party at Gregg/Klice Community Center
Stop by Gregg/Klice Community Center on Saturday, December 2, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for a free, family-friendly holiday party. Kids and families can enjoy games, crafts, treats, and visits from Santa Claus himself at Gregg/Klice’s biggest event of the year.

 

Pendleton Heights Holiday Homes Tour
Take advantage of an opportunity to view historic homes in the Pendleton Heights neigbhorhood on Saturday, December 2, from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. At the 11th Annual Holiday Homes Tour, attendees can snoop in five historic homes, grab a bite from a KC food truck and shop at the Artist Market featuring local artists. Downtown Dazzle
The dazzling light installation at Washington Square Park (Pershing Road and Grand Boulevard) was turned on after the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting in Crown Center on November 24. The lights will be on nightly through January 1, 2018, and Downtown Dazzle trolley rides will be held every Saturday through December 23, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Mob files: Investigating the KC Mafia at Central Library
The Central branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an investigation into the Kansas City mafia on Sunday, December 3, beginning at 2 p.m. Mob Files: Investigating the Kansas City Mafia will look at newly uncovered materials from The Kansas City Star and authorities about the local mob, from the time of its rise in the early 20th century, archiving police reports, mugshots, and other records.
Retired FBI agent William Ouseley, who spent two decades investigating and prosecuting organized crime figures, sits down with KCPT-Kansas City PBS editor Jonathan Bender for a discussion of the city’s gangland past and the investigative techniques used by reporters and law officers to expose illicit activities.

Stay strong, stay healthy
Start on the road to better health with Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, an 8-week strength training program at the North-East Public Library being offered by MU Extension. These simple, strength-building exercises will improve balance, health and state of mind. This program is designed for adults over age 60, and it began on October 30. Graphic Novel Book Club
Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, December 5, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Join the library each Tuesday on the Children’s floor for stories, crafts and a lot of imagination. Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics. Parking is free.
