Kansas City Museum – history of the R.A. Long family
Every Wednesday-Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) offers free docent-guided tours of the first floor of Corinthian Hall and the first floor of the Carriage House. Visitors learn about the history and legacy of the Long family and of the Kansas City Museum.

 
Word Basics II at Central Library
Stop by the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Wednesday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. for a secondary class on Microsoft Word basics. The Word Basics II class starts where Word Basics left off, covering lists, inserting pictures and more.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Friday, January 27
Northeast Fit-Mix
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, January 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a fitness class. The class alternates between chair fitness techniques and the new “Soul-Flo” yoga activities. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise in these courses at the North-East Public Library.

Enjoy story time at the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, January 27, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Bring your kids into the library for stories, songs, crafts and more.

 

Saturday, January 28
Computer Class – Microsoft
Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

 

Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will run from January 21 until April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Digital Gardening Tools
Stop by the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, January 28, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to learn about online resources that will help you have more fun and success with your garden.

KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have officially begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Monday, January 30
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, January 30 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

 

Tuesday, January 31
Beginning Spanish at the North-East Branch
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Tuesday, January 31, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to start learning how to speak basic Spanish. This introductory class will be focusing on basic grammar, reading, and pronunciation. The class will run weekly at the same time through February 28.

 

Free Tax Preparation at North-East Branch
Join the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Tuesday, January 31, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for free tax preparation. Representatives from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be on hand to assist with your federal and state (MO and KS) income tax returns. This service is available to individuals making $54,000 per year or less. Help is available on a walk-in basis only, and time slots fill up quickly. To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.  Certain documents will be required for this service, so please check out the Northeast Branch’s website or call ahead at 816.701.3485 for more details before arriving for assistance.

Arts Starts at the Library
Come out the the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for First Fridays on February 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. for a family-friendly art program. The first-floor Genevieve Guldner Gallery offers the exhibit ‘Coloring Space’, spotlighting the works of acclaimed painter and longtime Kansas City Art Institute instructor Warren Rosser. The Rocky and Gabriella Mountain Gallery houses ‘A Photo Album of Ireland,’ a touring exhibition of more than 120 photographs documenting the triumphs and turmoil of life in Ireland over the past century and a half. From the Library, patrons can head to the streetcar stop at Ninth and Main streets for a quick lift to further First Friday activities at the Crossroads Arts District.

 

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, February 6 at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

 

NEKC Chamber business classes continue
Now that it’s new headquarters are open, the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is looking to utilize its space. To that end, the chamber will be offering business-oriented courses for chamber members in 2017. The next course will be held on Wednesday, February 15, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Chairman of the Chamber Board and local attorney Jerry W. Potocnik will begin a two-part discussion about real estate. The February 15 class will focus on real estate leases.
