Substance abuse recovery

A substance abuse recovery meeting will take place at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at New Beginning Apostolic Church. Contact Frederick Wilson (816-786-1981) for more information.

KC Museum Hard Hat Tour

Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the 100+ year old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family. On these tours, you will see remaining original architecture on the first floors of Corinthian Hall (the mansion) and the Carriage House. Admission is free and tours will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

Thursday, September 8

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, September 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens it’s evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Feast of Fountains: a food truck fest

The next Feast of Fountains food truck fest will be held on Thursday, September 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Kessler Park (Benton and St. John). This event highlights prominent fountains throughout the city, while guests enjoy food from the city’s most popular food trucks. A portion of proceeds fund the City of Fountains Foundation. Food trucks participating include Monk’s Roast Beef, Plantain District, KC Pinoy, Greg Co. BBQ, CoffeeCakeKC, and Ohana’s Shaved Ice.

Friday, September 9

Knights of Columbus dinner/bingo

On Friday, September 9, the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host a dinner/bingo night at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3218 Lexington). Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and will include a choice of Italian sausage or hot dogs on the grill, sandwiches and a salad. Coffee is included, while drinks and dessert are available. Cost is $6 for sausage, $3 for hot dog dinner. Children under 12 get $1 off.

Saturday, September 10

Kansas City Jazz Academy

The Kansas City Jazz Academy, held at the Kansas City Jazz Museum (1616 E 18 St.) in the 18th and Vine District, is currently accepting registrations. Classes for elementary-aged students, as well as for toddlers and families, are held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday’s. Classes for 7th grade-high school students are split into two sections: hands-on performance time from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and jam sessions from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Visit americanjazzmuseum.org to register.

Sunday, September 11

Blue Valley Neighborhood community picnic

On Sunday, September 11, the Blue Valley Neighborhood Association will host a community picnic at Corrington Park from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. BVNA will provide high quality grilled meats, buns, chilled water, and paper products, plus a generous variety of foods donated by local merchants. Attendees are encouraged to bring pot luck dishes or snack items to complement. There are no tables, so please bring blankets and lawn chairs. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Corrington Park has a baseball diamond and horse shoe pit, and there will also be a large variety of youth games. There will be youth-oriented gifts, sports equipment and a prize drawing. There will be a face painter for youngsters, vintage cars for personal photo ops, information on the Save the Aladdin project, plus Police presentations and an opportunity to discuss your issues. Rain-date is September 18.

Chess club

Join the Kings Club Youth Chess Team at 10 a.m. every Sunday at New Beginning Apostolic Church, 200 N. Bales Ave. All kids 3rd-12th grades are welcome. Contact Gaston Woodland (816- 977-0470) for more information.

Monday, September 12

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting

The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, September 12th at the Kansas City Museum due to the Labor Day holiday falling on the association’s usual first Monday. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. A representative from The Giving Grove will be on hand, along with a representative from Legal Aid to address some nuisance properties.

Lykins Neighborhood meeting

The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, September 12, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. All Historic Northeast neighbors are welcome to join.

Tuesday, September 13

Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association meeting

The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 13, from 7 – 8 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, 1750 Independence Ave, KCMO.

Independence Plaza Council Monthly Meeting

Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 13, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting

The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, September 15, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center on Truman Road. Look for the sign.

Urban Homesteading Series

The University of Missouri Extension will be hosting an eight-part Urban Homesteading Series this fall, beginning on September 22. The classes are designed to provide hands-on skills to help attendees grow food at their own urban homesteads. Pre-registration for the entire series is due by September 15. Cost is $90 for the whole series, or $15 per session. Classes are held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., at 105 E. 5th Street in the River Market.
