Adult Thursday Games

Join North-East Public Library for its Adult Thursday Games at 10 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd. Join other grown-ups to play a variety of games.

La Chalupa Farmer’s Market

Mattie Rhodes’ La Chalupa’s Farmer’s Market, 148 N. Topping, is open for the season and will be held every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Enjoy fresh eggs, vegetables, fruit, baked goods and more. SNAP/EBT is accepted.

Story Time and Craft

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. which is geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers.

 

Saturday October 12

Indian Mound Neighborhood Cleanup

Indian Mound will host a neighborhood cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon. Leaf/brush and trash drop-off will be available at Budd Park. A tire trailer will also be set up at the park.

VFW Fish Fry

VFW Post #9997 will host a fish fry featuring catfish, hush puppies and the fixin’s at the VFW, 6801 Wilson Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Generous portions for $6.50! It all begins at 3 p.m. until it’s gone. All are welcome.

Brew-Story Trolley Tours

Take a tour through Kansas City’s “wet” past on Kansas City Museum’s Brew-Story Trolley Tours James Maxwell, author of “Hometown Beer – A History of Kansas City’s Breweries,” will lead you through Kansas City’s Prohibition past, including rides past the Imperial, the Muehlebach (later Schlitz) and Heim breweries. The tour will also include a tasting of selected brews from Kansas City’s own Boulevard Brewing Co. Cost is $35 and tour will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A tasting reception will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Meet at Union Station, 30 W. Pershing Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Scarritt Coffee Club Monthly Gathering

Scarritt Coffee Club will host its monthly gathering from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Guest of honor is Gib Shell, musical artist. Hosts are Jason Milbradt and Mike Stringer. Stringer will also give a short presentation on social networking in Northeast, tax incentives for Scarritt Renaissance and more. Please bring a savory or sweet breakfast hors d’oeuvre to share. Knights of Columbus Monthly Breakfast

Knights of Columbus will host its monthly breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall, 3208 Lexington Ave., Kansas City, Mo. Breakfast will include biscuits and gravy, sausage, pancakes, scrambled eggs, potato casserole, chorizo con huevo and more. Cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children ages 8-12.

NEKCHS Homes Tour

Northeast Kansas City Historical Society will host its annual Homes Tour on Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Six houses will be featured in the Lykins, Independence Plaza and Sheffield neighborhoods. None of the homes have been on tour before. Tickets cost $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets will be available the day of the event at the ticket tent at the Mayfair Cleaners, 2807 Independence Ave., Kansas City, Mo. True Grit

Join North-East Public Library for a showing of the 1969 film True Grit starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby at 10 a.m. Oct. 17. The film showing is part of Kansas City’s Big Read initiative.

Story Time with Rooster and Mattie

North-East Library will host a “Western Party” story time for youngsters on Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. as part of the Big Read. The story time will feature specially crafted story times that will introduce kids to Charles Portis, True Grit, and some of Mattie Ross’ exploits in the Wild West. Intended for audiences 3-5 years old. A variety of interactive stations will be set up for kids to enjoy.

Boy Scout Chili Dinner

Join Boy Scout Troop 80 for its Annual Chili Dinner from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Holy Rosary Scalabrini Hall, 910 Pacific Ave., Kansas City, Mo. The dinner will include the scouts’ award-winning chili, salad, dessert and a beverage. Adults are $6 and children are $3. Jim’s Hot Tamales will be sold separately for $1. All proceeds go toward sending every scout to summer camp.

Director’s Hard Hat Tour

Take an extended hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the more than 100- year-old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family, with Kansas City Museum Interim Director Denise Morrison on Oct. 19. Visitors will see Corinthian Hall in mid-renovation, the bare interior of the building exposed for the first time in decades. Cost is $5 and tour begins at 12:30 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd. Close-toed shoes required.

Make KCPS better

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) needs your input! KCPS will host a public meeting on Oct. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Manual Career Tech, 1215 E. Truman Rd. Help KCPS develop a long-range facilities master plan that will guide some new attendance boundaries and capital improvements decisions for school years 2015 to 2019.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Kansas City Central Patrol Division, along with the Main Street Corridor Development Corporation/Main Street Community Improvement District, will host a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MainCor parking lot, 3215 Main St. Safely disposed of unwanted drugs, no questions asked.
