Wreck and deadly shooting on Independence Ave leaves woman dead

One woman is dead following a crash and apparent shooting on Independence Avenue.

Monday night at 8 p.m., Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers were called to Independence and Garfield on a reported injury accident.

Upon arrival officers located a vehicle on its side which had apparently crashed. Officers observed the victim, an adult female, inside the vehicle who appeared to be suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. EMS responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Preliminarily investigation suggests there was a shooting just to the west of Independence and Garfield.

On Tuesday morning, KCPD identified the victim as Randie Smith, a 27-year-old Black woman.

Detectives and Crime Scene Personnel responded to the scene, which was processed last night. Detectives continue to collect information from witnesses.

Detectives are asking if you have any information, please call them at 816-234-5043. Or you can remain anonymous by calling the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest.
