KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The City Market is going to be the place to be this summer.

In addition to its weekly farmer’s market, representatives for the City Market have announced several events to take place during the summer.

Beginning tomorrow, Saturday, 14, marks the return of the popular program Discover You Can: Learn, Make and Share, a class on properly canning food. The class promotes awareness to the benefits of proper food preservation.

The class teaches how to can and vacuum seal food and shares recipes using fresh local produce. The classes at the City Market will be held at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturday in June, July and August in the Farm to Table Kitchen, located on the northside of the market square. Participants are eligible to win prizes with each class. The class if free to the public.

Another event returning to the City Market this summer is its movies in the park. The first installation begins at around 9 p.m. Friday, June 20 with a screening of the movie Back to the Future.

The City Market Cinemas feature open air movie screenings on the third Friday of June, July and August, located at Third and Main Streets. The movies featured were selected by a community vote. Admission to the screenings are free. Other movies being shown include The Shining on July 18 and the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Aug. 15.

Also joining the summer slate of events, the inaugural Busker Festival from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21.

A busker is a street performer who practices their craft in public for gratuities. The one day event will celebrate street performers at the City Market. Acts performing during the event include stilt walkers, dancers, comedians, circus acts, fire breathers and more. In addition to the street performers, the group Odd Ball Kids will be on hand to interact with children and channel their inner artists. Admission is free and the event is open to everyone visiting the City Market.
