KANSAS CITY, Missouri – If things aren’t going the way you planned, then sometimes its best to just start over.

That’s exactly what Jose Esquivel, 37, of Kansas City, Mo., did in 2009.

After working for a lawn care service for almost eight years, changes were made to the company that Esquivel didn’t agree with. He said he enjoyed working for his boss, but he just didn’t agree with the direction the company was going. So he and his wife Mireya, who worked along side him, quit.

“We decided to start our own company,” Esquivel said. “I was happy working for the other company. It’s hard to start something else but it’s something I had to do for myself and my family.”

In 2009, Esquivel opened Jose’s Lawn Care Service. The couple started with nothing and have since grown into a reputable service in the Northeast and Kansas City area.

“We started in the fall of 2009,” Esquivel said, adding he and his wife would go house-to-house, knocking on doors to see if people needed any lawn care service. “We started with raking leaves. We didn’t have a leaf blower, just old fashioned rakes.”

Since then, the business has grown into a full blown lawn care and landscaping service offering everything from outside maintenance including tree trimming, fences and decks. Esquivel said the business focuses on outside work, nothing inside the customer’s home. Currently, he said he has a couple of employees who focus on lawn care, while Esquivel is able to work on landscaping.

“We do a little bit of everything,” Esquivel said.

Within the past month, Esquivel joined the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. After years of working for Bobbi Baker-Hughes, president of the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, he said she recently told him about the chamber and the advantages to being a member.

“I see myself getting more involved with the community and Chamber when I can,” Esquivel said.

Before he moved to Kansas City, Esquivel said he worked in construction in Texas. He likes working outside with his hands. And if he takes on a project, he’s not leaving until perfect.

“If I take on a project, I want to make sure it’s done right and the client is happy and it’s what they want,” Esquivel said. “That is what is important to me with the business, to make sure everyone is happy with the finished product.”
