KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for a new high school soon to open in the industrial area of the East Bottoms.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the new Frontier STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) High School to celebrate the school building’s official grand opening. The newly renovated facility, approximately 20,000 square feet in size, is located at 6455 E. Commerce Ave. The facility includes eight classrooms, a cafeteria, computer lab, science lab, and other various rooms that will provide first-rate teaching and learning spaces for Frontier high school students. Phase two of the work will include twelve classrooms, a library, as well as, additional computer and science labs. Ugur Demircan, superintendent of Frontier Schools, said in a press release their goal for Frontier STEM High School students is when they graduate, “they will have a strong understanding of STEM and how it applies to the real world.”

Founded in 2005, Frontier Schools is a tuition-free, college preparatory public charter school sponsored by the University of Missouri — Kansas City (UMKC). The mission of Frontier Schools is to empower students to discover and develop their innate gifts and talents. With a demand for highly skilled professionals in areas of science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM careers, Frontier has a focus on cultivating its student’s education to help meet the future demands of the workforce.

The educators, administrators and community members who support Frontier have a combined interest in motivating and guiding students to pursue post-secondary or college degrees in these areas.
