Kansas City Police Department honors its 119 fallen officers during a May 23 memorial service at the KCPD Regional Police Academy. This year alone, 45 police officers in the U.S. have been killed in the line of duty, including one officer in Missouri, said KCPD Chief Darryl Forté. The memorial service included an honor guard, a 21-gun salute, bagpipers, a flyover by the police helicopter and a riderless horse representing the fallen officers. KCPD Communications Unit Supervisor L.C. Clark read aloud the names of the 119 officers killed in action – the first in 1881 and the last in 2001. Photos by Leslie Collins
