A pedestrian standing in the roadway near Independence Avenue and Brighton was struck by a car and left with critical injuries early Friday morning.

Just before 1:30 a.m., Kansas City Police Department officers responded to the area and located the victim.

The initial investigation determined that the pedestrian was standing in the westbound lanes of Independence Avenue when they were struck by a red sedan.

After striking the victim, the vehicle continued westbound on the Avenue without stopping. The make and model of the vehicle is unknown.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
