The City of Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation Board of Commissioners is offering opportunities for the community to join in the conversation on renaming a section of Oak Street from 45th to 52nd to Volker Boulevard. The Board has approved the renaming of a major thoroughfare of Blue Parkway, Swope Parkway, and Volker Boulevard in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  

In 1950 the KC Parks Board paid tribute to the memory of William Volker, for his dedicated service and generous heart to all people, by naming a roadway from The Paseo to Brookside Boulevard after him. In keeping with its stated desire to respect the actions of past Board members, the current KC Parks Board would like to continue to honor the memory of Mr. William Volker. The KC Parks Board agrees it is fitting to request the renaming of Oak Street from 45th Street on the north to 52nd Street on the south to become Volker Boulevard.

The KC Parks Board invites residents to give their feedback on the renaming of Oak St. to Volker Boulevard at the following dates and times:
