KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with a reported rape and kidnapping in Northeast Kansas City.

In a press release from Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, Omar Lopez-Maldonado has been charged with: first-degree rape or attempted rape, a felony; two counts of sodomy or attempted sodomy, each a felony; kidnapping, a class B felony; first-degree assault; a class B felony; and tampering with a motor vehicle, a class C felony.

According to court records, the victim was kidnapped from a residence along the 1200 block of Fremont Avenue on Jan. 19, 2016, by two men who woke her and threw her in a vehicle before driving away. The victim attempted to escape, however, but was unsuccessful. Both men raped and sodomized her, holding her at gunpoint. They drove back to the area of 12th and Fremont Streets when a witness tried to intervene. The men fired the gun, shooting out the car glass. They fled the scene and the victim reported to police. Police traced the suspects and their vehicle in a social media picture to the defendant.

The case remains under investigation. Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000.
