Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander on Nov. 21 announced a push to pass legislation that would make it easier for active military members to run for office.

Current Missouri law requires a candidate wanting to run for office to file in person in Jefferson City in order to be placed on the ballot. This bill would allow a military member to designate a third party to file in-person on his or her behalf.

“When members of our armed forces choose to continue their public service by running for office, they should be on a level playing field with other candidates,” said Kander, a military veteran, in a written statement.

Lawmakers are scheduled to begin their legislative session in January.
