KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The city of Kansas City’s Health Department is advising residents and visitors to the Garrison Community Center (located in the Columbus Park neighborhood) that lead has been found in the upper floors and basement of the facility. As a precaution the center has been temporarily closed until the lead dust can be cleaned and eradicated.

Amy Roberts RN, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Manager for the Health Department, indicated that staff and visitors have had some exposure but the risk was low.

“Most childhood lead exposures occur from deteriorating paint in homes built prior to 1978 but it can be from other sources,” Roberts said.

Residents concerned about exposure to lead should contact the city’s Childhood Lead Poisoning program at 816-513-6048.
