The Kansas City Police Department is offering several women’s self defense classes, all free to the public.

According to KCPD, the training combines lectures and a hands-on approach and is taught by police department’s defensive tactics instructors. The class will focus on the importance of awareness, prevention, streetwise precaution and self-defense.

Participants are asked to wear athletic type clothing, with no buttons or zippers. Socks and long sleeve shirts are required.

Enrollment is open to females 13 years of age or older, but anyone under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Each session will be held from 8 a.m. to noon.

The class is free but pre-registration is required. To RSVP, call 413-3500 or email angela.mccune@kcpd.org. Each class is limited to 50 participants.

KCPD is also taking names for a future offering of an advanced techniques session for anyone who has previously attended the Basic Women’s Self Defense class.  These sessions will review the techniques taught in the basic class and build upon those for more advanced techniques. To register call 413-3500.
