Kansas City Police Department is adding an extra element to its sobriety checkpoint this weekend.

To further encourage citizens to drive sober, KCPD is working to honor local victims who lost their loves to drunk drivers. For the first time, KCPD will display signs memorializing victims of drunk drivers at the checkpoint. During the Sept. 21-23 sobriety checkpoint, mother and daughter Diane, 44, and Anna Bronson, 11, will be honored. Both were killed on July 4, 2011, in Kansas City by a driver whose blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. The driver was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Members of the Bronson family, along with representatives from MADD, will also be at the checkpoint.

The sobriety checkpoint will be held at a location in Kansas City that’s known for DUI related crashes and DUI arrests.
