On Wednesday, April 11th, the City’s Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee unanimously passed an ordinance that would create the 12th Street Heritage Community Improvement District (CID), if it’s ultimately approved by the City Council.

The CID would be valid for 20 years in an area from The Paseo to Prospect Ave., which encompasses the Gates Shopping Center at 1221 Brooklyn Avenue. If approved, the CID created by Ordinance No. 180249 would impose a new 1% sales tax within the CID. The funds would be used for improvements to the corridor’s streetscape, increased security and the installation of additional pedestrian lighting along this stretch of 12th street.

The CID is intended to cut down on crime and remove blight from the area. As with other such districts, the 12th Street Heritage CID would be required to submit annual reports, budgets and copies of any written resolutions that are passed by the district’s board to the City Council.
