When Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers checked on a Northeast residence to issue a warrant Dec. 19, a shoot-out ensued.

Officers arrived at 526 N. Lawndale shortly before 11 a.m. and while officers stood outside the home, a party inside the home fired multiple rounds at the officers, striking one of them in the leg. Officers returned fire and then took cover. The injured officer, a 15-year veteran and member of KCPD’s Tactical Response Team, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Officers then called an Operation 100, and at about 1 p.m., KCPD tactical officers used shields as they entered the residence to locate the suspect, 26-year-old Joel Bravard. Inside, they found Bravard who had been shot. Bravard was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. Officers cleared the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. Bravard has since died. Investigation will continue to determine the exact cause of gun shot injury.

Officers were delivering a Platte County warrant for Bravard and also wanted to question him about the death of 19-year-old Michelle Russell, whose body was found in an abandoned vehicle in Independence last month. The death investigation is ongoing.
